耳鼻喉科專科醫生林建業說，會厭位於舌根之下、喉嚨聲帶之上，會厭囊腫形狀似雞蛋，醫學界相信囊腫是由於喉嚨腺體管道閉塞，以致分泌未能正常排出，當分泌積聚於會厭，便會腫脹起來，形成會厭囊腫。
初期病徵不明顯

林建業表示，不同年齡及性別人士都有機會患會厭囊腫，研究指喉嚨囊腫約佔所有喉嚨病變之中百分之五。大部分成人囊腫起初時，體積細小，沒有病徵，即使患上亦不易察覺，可能只有輕微喉部不適，利用內窺鏡檢查才可發現，又或做全身麻醉手術時，插喉困難才知道。

他又說，嬰兒及兒童的氣道及食道較窄，會厭囊腫影響呼吸和進食，嚴重可令幼童因呼吸困難而猝死；成人會厭囊腫發炎則會發燒、變聲，呼吸困難。

林建業指出，治療會厭囊腫方法可分為傳統手術切除或激光切除，傳統手術如切割不徹底，有機會復發；激光手術後復發機會較低，一般上午做完手術，下午可進食，翌日出院。

七十多歲的梁先生為退休醫生，○七年中發現進食時有怪聲，後來情況愈來愈明顯。梁先生求診後，發現是會厭囊腫，起初他打算先觀察病情，再行決定是否做手術。但到去年初，梁先生喉嚨經常發炎，再次求診，囊腫直徑已達三厘米，故決定接受激光手術將囊腫切除。梁先生說，手術後味覺退化，半年後回復正常。
